“At the top of the protagonists was the young American Brian Jagde, already praised in the Neapolitan Carmen of Zubin Mehta in 2015, in which he performed a convincing and vocally very gifted Don José. In the role of the unfortunate Volterrian painter he has even gone beyond very high expectations. The voice of an authentic lirico-spinto tenor finds its maximum space in the high notes, resonating like sure lightning strikes. The B-natural on “La vita costasse” was the juicy aperitif for the “Victoria,” a glorious victory, alone worth the cost of the ticket and at the height of those of the most triumphant Cavaradossis in history. The long-awaited “E lucevan le stelle,” introduced by a melancholic clarinet in a state of grace, was performed with taste and appropriate style, with a mezzo-voce leaning in where required, and dramatic phrasing sung without simple tricks. {All’altezza della protagonista è stato il giovane americano Brian Jagde, già elogiato nella Carmen napoletana di Zubin Metha del 2015, in cui esibì un Don Josè convincente e vocalmente assai dotato. Nel ruolo dello sfortunato pittore volterriano è addirittura andato oltre le ottime aspettative. La voce da autentico tenore lirico-spinto trova il suo massimo sfogo negli acuti, risuonanti come sicure folgori. Il si naturale su La vita mi costasse è stato il succoso aperitivo di un Vittoria, vittoria glorioso, da solo valente il costo del biglietto e all’altezza di quelli dei più trionfali Cavaradossi della storia. L’attesa E lucevan le stelle, introdotta da un melancolico clarinetto in stato di grazia, è stata eseguita con gusto e stile appropriato, con una appoggiata mezzavoce ove richiesto, e le frasi drammatiche cantate senza facili gigionerie. La tragica morte, sotto la tiara papale che domina lo stemma pontificio, è stata resa con efficace e struggente contorcimento del corpo, a prova di notevoli capacità attoriali del tenore, dal presente e dal futuro luminosi.}
