American tenor Brian Jagde stood out in his role debut as Der Fremde. Without effort, he projected his golden, flowing, and warm voice over the massive orchestra. It was very understandable why Heliane falls for his charisma."

“Above all, the versatile tenor Brian Jagde crowned a cast list of exquisite quality. He gave tirelessly in color and volume, textual security, and heroic splendor in a sovereign interpretation of the “Stranger.”

{Allen voran krönte der so vielseitige Tenor Brian Jagde eine Besetzungsliste von insgesamt erlesener Qualität. Er gab unermüdlich Farbe und Volumen, Textsicherheit und heldenhaften Glanz in der souveränen Interpretation des „Fremden“.}
M. Lehnert – Das Opernglas

“Brian Jagde lent heroic tenor tone to the Stranger …”
Carlos María Soare – Opera Magazine

“Jagde’s strikingly bright and powerful tenor goes to the end in particular with dramatic scope, his Stranger is a dazzling, ambiguous figure. Mediator for king and queen, seducer of the people, seducer of the queen, and a miraculous medium with resurrection skills.”

{Jagdes durchschlagender heller und kräftiger Tenor läuft insbesondere zum Schluss zu dramatischer Größe auf, sein Fremder ist eine schillernd uneindeutige Figur. Mediator für König und Königin, Verführer des Volkes, Verführer der Königin und Wundermedium mit Auferstehungsfähigkeiten.}
IOCO

“Brian Jagde captivates as the Stranger who fascinates the Queen, with lasting radiance and an erotic timbre.”

{Brian Jagde besticht als der Fremde, der die Königin so fasziniert, mit erotisch timbrierter Dauer-Strahlkraft.}
Joachim Lange – concerti

“The almost irreproachable cast assembles five principal roles of very high intensity, starting with the two of the main couple, Brian Jagde’s Stranger and Sara Jakubiak’s Heliane …

Built like an American football player, the young Brian Jagde (soon to be in Paris for La Forza del Destino) enters with bravery in a role of length and difficulty like that of the Emperor in Die Frau ohne Schatten. During the first two acts, until his death, his exalted and taught voice does not suffer from a defect in power or color, with a light and dark veil particularly agreeable in the low end of the spectrum. His broad physique allows the young man to always have charisma on stage, even when he does nothing, or to try to convince Heliane naked that she makes a mistake in offering her his being …

Let’s hope that the triumph for the musical team at the end of the opera opens up new perspectives of stagings of this work, as well as to the other unknown pieces of Korngold, including the magnificent Violanta.”

Espérons que le triomphe pour l’équipe musicale à la fin de l’opéra ouvre de nouvelles perspectives de reprises à cette œuvre, ainsi qu’aux autres pièces méconnues de Korngold, dont le magnifique Violanta.}
Vincent Guillemin – ResMusica

“The three soloists were sensational. Sara Jakubiak and Josef Wagner (= Heliane and Der Herrscher, i.e. king and queen) and the onslaught of Brian Jagde (The Stranger, i.e. our Wanderer) – I fall to my knees in front of all three of them!!! The applause didn’t want to end. A crazy evening!”

{Sensationell die drei Gesangsprotagonistinnen … Sara Jakubiak und Josef Wagner (= Heliane und Der Herrscher; also Königin & König) attackieren Brian Jagde (= Der Fremde; also unser Wanderer) – alle drei zum Abknien!!! … Nicht enden wollender Beifall. Irrer Abend.}
Andre Sokolowski – der Freitag

“This was a musical feast. The premiere was cast on a very high level even in the smaller roles. For me, American tenor Brian Jagde stood out in his role debut as Der Fremde. Without effort, he projected his golden, flowing, and warm voice over the massive orchestra. It is very understandable why Heliane falls for his charisma.”

{Das war ein musikalisches Fest. Die Premiere war bis in die Nebenrollen hinein auf sehr hohem Niveau besetzt. Herausragend war für mich der amerikanische Tenor Brian Jagde, der sein Rollendebüt als Fremder gab. Er hat sich mühelos mit einer golden strömenden, warmen Stimme über das riesige Orchester hinweg gesetzt. Das war sehr glaubwürdig, dass Heliane seinem Charisma erliegt.}
Sabine Lange – NDR.de

“In what can only be hoped will be a comeback for a neglected masterpiece, the Deutsche Oper staged Korngold’s Das Wunder der Heliane for the first time in nine decades on March 18 … Jagde also was moving, bringing clear German diction, a powerful spinto timbre, and the urgency this music demands. “Give me death for her life!” he exclaims in the courtroom scene of Act 2.”
Rebecca Schmid – Classical Voice North America

“The excellence of the performance is in part due to this ensemble: the American soprano Sara Jakubiak, who had already been lauded as Eva in the Meistersinger in Munich, embodies Héliane with extraordinary dramatic power and flawless technical mastery. In Brian Jagde, she finds an equally intense and luminous stage partner, with a dramatic tenor that retains the memory of his baritone training and a very charismatic portrayal.”

{L’excellence de l’interprétation participe du même ensemble: la soprano américaine Sara Jakubiak, que l’ on avait déjà pu apprécier en Eva dans les Meistersinger à Munich, incarne Héliane avec une puissance dramatique extraordinaire et une maîtrise technique sans défaut. Elle trouve en Brian Jagde un partenaire de scène tout aussi intense et lumineux, avec un ténor dramatique qui conserve le souvenir de son entraînement de baryton et un jeu très charismatique.}
Luc Roger – Opera World

“Deutsche Oper Berlin went once more on a treasure hunt and struck a rich vein with E.W. Korngold’s opera ‘Das Wunder der Heliane’ … The American tenor Brian Jagde is Der Fremde. He has exactly the right captivating voice for such a visionary role, which climaxes in the magnificent final duet with Heliane, “Wer hin sich schenkt, der hat sich überwunden, und Erdenkerker wird Himmelsdom.”

{Die Deutsche Oper Berlin war mal wieder auf Schatzsucherfährte und ist mit Erich Wolfgangs Korngolds Oper „Das Wunder der Heliane“ auf eine echte Goldader gestoßen … Der amerikanische Tenor Brian Jagde ist der Fremde. Er hat das genau richtige, das betörende Stimmmaterial, das er zu einer derart visionären Partie braucht, die in dem herrlichen Schlussduett mit Heliane gipfelt: „Wer hin sich schenkt, der hat sich überwunden, und Erdenkerker wird Himmelsdom.”}
Jürgen Gahre – Kieler Nachrichten

“… Brian Jagde was a great surprise. A steady, warm, courageous voice and always phrased musically, the American tenor made the difficulties of the role of the Journeyman seem minor. If in the whole act it was brilliant (the duet with Jakubiak was beautiful), when it was reprised he was simply spectacular, with all the conviction of a prophet of love.”

{… Brian Jagde va ser una ben grata sorpresa. Veu ferma, calorosa, valent per dalt i fraseig sempre musical, el tenor nord-americà va aconseguir que les dificultats del paper de l’Estranger semblessin minúcies. Si en tot l’acte primer va estar brillant (preciós el duo amb Jakubiak), quan va ressuscitar va estar simplement espectacular, amb tota la convicció d’un profeta de l’amor.}
Xavier Cester – El cronista errant

“Brian Jagde sings [Der fremde] with a darkly colored tenor voice that is yet brilliant in the top and impressively powerful. His singing is emphatic, his voice is full … The audience’s ovation after the second performance on March 22 showed that this exemplary production at DOB can be counted as one of the highlights of this season.”

{Brian Jagde singt ihn mit in der Mitte dunkel timbriertem, doch in der Höhe strahlendem und ungemein leistungsfähigem Tenor. Emphatisch ist sein Gesang, von trunkenem Klang die Stimme … Der Jubel des Publikums nach der 2. Aufführung am 22. 3. 2018 signalisierte, dass diese exemplarische Produktion der Deutschen Oper bereits jetzt als ein Höhepunkt der laufenden Saison gelten darf.}
Bernd Hoppe – Opera Lounge

“Deutsche Oper provided ideal voices for all roles…and Brian Jagde as Der Fremde is a tenor of luminous power, even beyond his own death.”

{Die Deutsche Oper kann für alle Rollen ideale Stimmen aufbieten … Und Brian Jagde ist als Fremder ein Tenor von strahlender Stärke, selbst über den eigenen Tod hinaus.}
Frederik Hanssen – Der Tagesspiegel

“A magnificent ensemble of singers…equally brilliant is tenor Brian Jagde as Der Fremde, a role whose immense challenges seem to cost him no effort at all. Until the last note his voice radiated and shone alongside the orchestra.”
Kai Luehrs-Kaiser – Deutschlandfunk.de

“With Korngold’s sadly still neglected opera Das Wunder der Heliane, Deutsche Oper Berlin offers a miracle, at least in a musical sense…Brian Jagde is cast excellently in this role: his tenor voice flows with astonishing naturalness and aplomb and blazes sensually with his desire for eroticism and sex. He argues convincingly with the Ruler in the first act and in court in the second act, and he leads Heliane after his resurrection with consoling fearlessness to elysium.

In the end, the ovation for all performers was immense and justified. Maybe miracles still do happen, when a neglected opera finds its way back unto the great stages, perhaps in a production that is a bit less sober and does better justice to the game of mystery or at least to the metaphor. Because “Miarcles occur again and again.”

Der Jubel für alle Ausführenden war am Ende immens und verdient. Vielleicht geschieht das Wunder doch noch, dass eine zu unrecht vernachlässigte Oper den Weg zurück auch auf die großen Bühnen findet, vielleicht auch in einer Inszenierung, die etwas weniger nüchtern und dafür dem Mysterienspiel oder wenigstens der Metapher etwas gerechter wird. Denn „Wunder gibt es immer wieder“!}
oper aktuell

“The Stranger, while not quite as prone to polar extremes, was forced to alternate between confidence, fear and rapture, often in quick succession, and Brian Jagde managed to give compelling voice to each of these modes without compromising the fundamental mystery at the heart of the character. He was at his most arresting in those sections that demanded greatest boldness of expression – of which Korngold provided plenty – but his appealing, slightly dark tone and ease in the lower-lying passages made for a performance with no obvious weaknesses.”
Jesse Simon – Mundoclasico.com

“In the part of the young stranger, Brian Jagde is himself discovered as a tenor that is certainly going through his best moment: confident, with a firm emission and an infallible technique, he managed to resolve the steep tessitura of his role without apparent effort. His voice is very interesting, because it has at the same time a good dose of drive and a flexible nature. It would be a good choice, a priori, for parts as diverse as Eneé of Les troyens, Walter of Meistersinger or even Lohengrin. However, his calendar is full of performances of Tosca, Carmen, Turandot and Aida, as if it were the agenda of an Italian spinto. Be that as it may, it’s a voice to follow, with important commitments on the schedule in the coming seasons.”

{En la parte del joven extranjero, Brian Jagde se descubre como un tenor que a buen seguro atraviesa su mejor momento: seguro, con una emisión firme y una técnica infalible, consiguió resolver la empinada tesitura de su parte sin aparente esfuerzo. Su voz es muy interesante, pues posee al mismo tiempo una buena dosis de empuje y una naturaleza flexible. Se diría una buena opción, a priori, para partes tan dispares como el Eneas de Les troyens, el Walther de Meistersinger o incluso un Lohengrin. Sin embargo su agenda está cuajada de representaciones de Tosca, Carmen, Turandot o Aida, como si fuese un spinto italiano de libro. Sea como fuere, una voz a seguir, con importantes compromisos en agenda para las próximas temporadas.}
Platea Magazine

“Still, this Korngold premiere at Deutsche Oper is a vocal feast…her young partner Brian Jagde as “Der Fremder” manages it (singing over the orchestra) in such a barnstorming way that I almost wished the final duet would go on forever. And ever. Since the Richard Leech’s house debut many decades ago (in “Les Huguenots”) I haven’t heard such a tenor at the Deutsche Oper. He has sung Calaf in San Francisco and will sing Radames in Seattle soon; hopefully he will do the same in Berlin.”

{Trotzdem ist diese Korngold-Premiere an der Deutschen Oper Berlin ein Sängerfest … dafür schafft das ihr junger Partner Brian Jagde als ‚Fremder‘ mit einem explosiven Puccini-Tenor derart fulminant, dass ich fast wünschte, das Schlussduett könnte ewig weitergehen. Und weitergehen. Seit dem Hausdebüt von Richard Leech vor vielen Jahrzehnten (in den ‘Hugenotten’) habe ich an der DOB keinen solchen Tenor mehr gehört. Er singt demnächst Kalaf in San Francisco und Radames in Seattle; hoffentlich tut er das auch in Berlin.}
Dr. Kevin Clarke – Klassik.com

“The American tenor Brian Jagde is an outstanding Stranger. With his spinto tenor of iron sound, his singing is full of drama and passion. His voice has a beautiful shine and has a penetrating power and stable height.”

{Der amerikanische Tenor Brian Jagde stellt einen hervorragenden Fremden dar. Mit seinem Spinto-Tenor eisernen Klangs singt er voller Dramatik und Leidenschaft. Seine Stimme hat einen wunderschönen Glanz und besitzt eine durchdringende Kraft und stabile Höhe.}
Andreas Schmidt – Klassik begeistert

“The great tenor, American Brian Jagde, with a beautifully bright sounding tenor, who also managed to move forward on his journey despite the densely populated orchestra, was a great success. The singer has been devoted mainly to the Italian repertoire, with Prince’s role in Rusalka; but his future will probably belong to the pivotal parts in Richard Wagner’s works. Even his acting was extremely flexible and natural.”

{Obrovský úspěch si plně zasloužil mladý tenorista, Američan Brian Jagde s nádherně kovově znějícím tenorem, který se bez problémů zvládl dostat i přes hustě obsazený orchestr. Pěvec se zatím věnuje hlavně italskému oboru, má v repertoáru i Prince v Rusalce; ale jeho budoucnost bude asi patřit stěžejním partům v dílech Richarda Wagnera. I herecky působil neobyčejně tvárně a přirozeně.}
Václav Bečvár – OperaPlus

“The resurrection of “Heliane’s Miracle,” another work by Korngold returns from the world of the forgotten, almost dead music, to the world of live works, resounding on successive stages and in theaters of the world. May it continue to be as fortunate as in the Deutsche Oper Berlin, where it was produced so that its resurrection would be impressive and did not lose any of its complicated, fascinating mysticism and irresistible melodrama that all the artists involved in this performance gave so well …

The opponent the ruler – dramatic and powerful – was Brian Jagde (Stranger). His excellent condition allowed him not only to not fall down during the implementation of a very exploiting and expanded role, it can be said that with the course of the performance he sang better and better, without losing the text even in forte and in the heights. In the latter, the singer seems very grand and so you could feel, listening to him – it sounded so euphoric, how he has created this quasi-messiah.”

Przeciwwagę dla Władcy – dramaturgicznie i wykonawczo – stanowił Brian Jagde (Przybysz). Znakomita kondycja pozwoliła mu nie dość, że nie opaść sił podczas realizacji bardzo eksploatującej i rozbudowanej partii, to jeszcze można powiedzieć, że z biegiem przedstawienia śpiewał coraz lepiej, nie gubiąc przy tym tekstu nawet w forte i w górach. W tych ostatnich śpiewak czuje się naprawdę świetnie i tak też można było się poczuć, słuchając go – brzmiał tak euforycznie, jak powinien brzmieć kreowany przez niego niby-mesjasz.}
Szymon Żuchowski – Kultura Liberalna

“… American tenor Brian Jagde with his powerful tenor voice – which is not just seemingly inexhaustible but full of nuances as well – is a real experience.”

{… der american Tenor Brian Jagde mit schier unerschöpflicher, obendrein noch facettenreicher Tenor-Wucht ein echtes Erlebnis.}

“And Brian Jagde as the foreign lover with his powerful tenor voice…”

{Dazu Brian Jagde als fremder Geliebter mit starkem Tenor …}
Barbara Wiegand – rbb24

“A tenor luxury limousine …there are cheers because the singing is loud but also so fantastic…Brian Jagde as Fremder, while not yet a star, is an (American) luxury tenor limo in a silver carriage. He fires up the motor even in the last meters in an astonishing way.”

{Eine Tenor-Luxuslimousine … Gejubelt wird auch, eben weil so laut, aber eben doch famos gesungen wird … Brian Jagde als Fremder, gleichfalls kein Star, ist eine australische Tenor-Luxuslimousine in Silberkarosserie. Er lässt sogar noch auf den letzten Metern den Motor aufheulen.}
Kai Luehrs-Kaiser – kulturradio robb 24

“The American Brian Jagde establishes this redeeming character figure with detailed gestures.”

{Diesem Heilsbringer verleiht der Amerikaner Brian Jagde mit feiner Gesten Profil.}
Herbert Spaich – Film Spaicher

“The vocal casting is fabulous … American tenor Brian Jagde sings The Stranger like Calaf, Cavadarossi, and Radames, roles with which he’s making a splash in several houses.”

{Die sängerische Besetzung ist fabel-haft … Der amerikanische Tenor Brian Jagde singt den Fremden wie Calaf, Cavaradossi und Radames, Partien, mit denen er derzeit an verschiedenen Opernhäusern Furore macht.}
Dieter David Scholz

“Early in the evening, Brian Jagde may appear to lack the power to embody the mysterious Stranger … But the young American tenor has the look of a seducer required by the libretto and, from his first look, we admire the cut of the voice and the elegant legato. The victor in assurance and projection over the performance, Brian Jagde finally demonstrates excellence, especially as his physical characterization of the Stranger makes him the ideal antithesis of the Ruler …”

{En début de soirée, Briaj Jagde peut sembler manquer de puissance pour incarner le mystérieux Étranger… Mais le jeune ténor américain possède l’allure de séducteur requise par le livret et, dès son premier air, on admire le mordant de la voix et l’élégant legato. Gagnant en assurance et en projection au fil de la représentation, Brian Jagde se révèlera finalement excellent, d’autant que sa caractérisation physique de l’Étranger en fait l’antithèse idéale du Souverain…}
Nicolas Blanmont – Opéra Magazine

“Brian Jagde as Der Fremde adds plenty of to die for highlights with his luxurious and glorious tenor … On stage he elicits a special brilliance as if his voice illuminated his character – a messianic creature of light, just as the libretto demands it.”

{Brian Jagde als der Fremde setzt mit seinem verschwenderischen Prachttenor reichlich Schmelzglanzlichter dazu … Auf der Bühne geht ein besonderer Glanz von ihm aus, als würde seine Stimme seine Gestalt zum Leuchten bringen – eine messianische Lichtgestalt, wie es das Libretto fordert.}
Georg Kasch – Berliner Morgenpost

“It is very fortunate that such an ideal stage for the singers’ artistic craft is filled basically perfectly in this production. The triumvirate of the hero (Brian Jagde), ruler (Josef Wagner), and saint (Sara Jakubiak) could hardly work better together. The trio shines on this opening night…his role debut shines golden on the parquet—remarkably effortless.”

{Ein großes Glück, dass eine so ideale Bühne für das Kunsthandwerk der Sänger in dieser Inszenierung praktisch makellos ausgefüllt wird. Das Dreigestirn aus Held (Brian Jagde), Herrscher (Josef Wagner) und Heiliger (Sara Jakubiak) könnte kaum besser zusammen funktionieren. Das Trio glänzt an diesem Premierenabend … schimmert auch sein Rollendebüt golden über das Parkett … bemerkenswert mühelos.}
Maximilian Schäffer – junge Welt

“In this, the vocal cast led by the soprano Sara Jakubiak and the tenor Brian Jagde collaborated, as well as decisively, how they splendidly represented the traditional quality and accredited solvency of the American school of singers exhibiting a very solid musical preparation and an expression that was always sincere and genuine. In particular, Brian Jagde has everything to be a great tenor of German and Wagnerian repertoire.

Power, resistance, a capacity to undertake an impossible tessitura, projection, timbre, sonority … Magnificent, however, was the interpretation of Jagde of this foreigner, a messianic character that makes the people recover the smile, the illusion of being happy, something that their tyrannical Governor forbids them, because he thinks that men are not mature enough to be happy.”

Brian Jagde lo tiene todo para ser un gran tenor de repertorio alemán y Wagneriano en particular. Potencia, resistencia, capacidad para acometer una tesitura imposible, proyección, timbre, sonoridad … Magnífica, sin embargo, fue la interpretación de Jagde de este extranjero, un personaje mesiánico que hace que el pueblo recupere la sonrisa, la ilusión por ser feliz, algo que les prohibe su tiránico Gobernador, porque piensa que los hombres no son los suficientemente maduros para ser felices.}
Raúl Chamorro Mena – Codalario

“Brian Jagde plays the Stranger, the happy youth. This singer’s strengths lie in the virtually non-stop forte sounds in the medium-high and high registers – I can imagine his Calaf well.”

{Brian Jagde gibt den Fremden, den fröhlichen Jüngling. Die Stärken des Sängers liegen in den fast unausgesetzt geforderten Fortetönen der höheren und hohen Lagen – seinen Calaf kann mich sich schon gut ausmalen.}
Achim Dombrowski – Opera-Online

“The American tenor Brian Jagde can cope with the nearly Straussian tessitura of the Stranger very well. His top notes are as impressive as his stamina …”
