This summer, Brian Jagde makes his debut at the Arena di Verona singing Don José in a new production of Bizet’s Carmen, which opens the Arena’s 96th season in celebratory fashion. Mr. Jagde sings the role on June 22 (opening night) & 29, and returns later in the summer for performances on August 25, 28 & 31. Hugo de Ana serves as director and designer for this production, with musical direction by Francesco Ivan Ciampa. The complete cast list for all performances is available via Arena.it.

Production description:

De Ana sets his Carmen a century later than the libretto, in the 1930’s, an important historical period to emphasize the protagonist’s incessant search for her independence and freedom, which will lead her, as a torero in the Plaza de Toros, to face, until her death, male arrogance and a society hostile to the fact that she is a gypsy and therefore different.
