De Ana sets his Carmen a century later than the libretto, in the 1930’s, an important historical period to emphasize the protagonist’s incessant search for her independence and freedom, which will lead her, as a torero in the Plaza de Toros, to face, until her death, male arrogance and a society hostile to the fact that she is a gypsy and therefore different.
